In most cases when someone refers to galvanized metal roofing they are specifically referring to an inner metal layer of iron and carbon alloy steel that has been dipped in a hot zinc bath and is now coated with a thin layer of the material. Galvalume steel is similar to galvanized but rather than using a primarily zinc coating galvalume uses a combination of aluminum and zinc. Therefore galvanized metal roofing is any roofing material that has been treated with a layer of zinc in order to last longer and age without rust. The aluminum better protects against corrosion in certain environments than galvanized and also provides a smaller smoother spangle for a more uniformed appearance.

Galvanized steel is a low maintenance product that is known for durability light weight for ease of use or transport. Corrosion is the death of metal roofing as we all know. This coating helps extends the life of a steel panel and slow the corrosion process. Galvalume and galvanized steel roofing are affected differently by corrosion.

The one exception is when the coating is penetrated scratched or chipped by falling or blowing debris for example.
